African Classical music took centre-stage in Cape Town Thursday night at an Africa Day event hosted by the Western Cape Government, Africa Arts and Iziko Museums.

The night featured world premieres of new works by the acclaimed South African composer, Bongani Ndodana-Breen and Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Tunde Jegede.

A South African opera brings the life of Winnie Mandela to the stage. The opera is based on the story of Winnie Mandela’s struggles while her husband, former South African President Nelson Mandela, was in prison. VOA’s Ndimyake Mwakalyelye reports.
